Wrench 100 UPDATE: Team Fortress 2 Engineer gets patch, golden wrenches
Valve today announced a major patch for the Engineer class in their uber-popular and online-only shooter Team Fortress 2. While this update has been teased at for a few weeks, it’s now officially official and we’ve got all the info you spigot-heads need.
Except that only one nugget of info around this update has been made public. So ya, I may have just lied to you. But, I can tell you how Valve, in their own special way, will be unveiling more and more info on the update. You see, the update will go live this Thursday and until then Valve will be awarding in-game golden wrenches randomly to TF2 players who don their Engineer hats. There are 100 golden wrenches in all and with every 25 wrenches handed out a new nugget of info will be revealed on the TF2 Wrench Log. The wrenches, when used, will turn corpses to gold.
It’s kind of like Willie Wonka. Except there are alot more golden wrenches being handed out than there were golden tickets. And the wrenches don’t get you into an exclusive, chocolate filled factory. Also, don’t eat wrenches.
The Wrench Log shows 47 of the shiny tools have been handed out so far. The info released at number 25 was on the Engineer’s new gun: the Frontier Justice. Check out the screenshot below for the details as to how it differs from the Engineer’s current firearm, the shotgun:
Only three more wrenches till we get to know more. It’s an interesting thing Valve’s done here in leveraging the game’s fans to come on and play some more to speed up the flow of info on this long awaited update. Don’t feel used, just go build some turrets.
UPDATE: Wrench #50 was given away last night, and the next nugget of info has been let loose. Replacing the Engineer’s pistol will be The Wrangler, a nifty little device that gives control over sentry guns. Check out more info in the blueprints below. And be sure to check out the official Engineer Update page for first glimpses of a new map coming with this update as well, “Upward.”
UPDATE: 75 golden wrenches gone, folks. With this third update we learn of a new map, Hightower, and a new slew of melee weapons for the Engineer. Yep, you guessed it, wrenches. Check out a details on the new tools and a little Easter egg on the TF2 blog.
UPDATE: The 100th Golden Wrench is now officially distributed. Sad news for everyone trying to still get one, but luckily this means we have the final details regarding the Engineer patch update. Some extremely sweet deets are now available showing that the Wrench is being replaced by The Gunslinger glove. This uber-glove of sorts will provide the wearer with +25 max health, as well as a combo attack, where the third punch landed is always a crit. This is sure to rock and sock some opposing team’s skulls. In addition, The Gunslinger provides the ability to drop mini-sentries at a 4x faster rate than regular sentries, as well as them popping up with full health. They will only cost you a mere 100 metal, so prepare for mini-sentry fests on servers soon. These turrets will only do half the damage and they can’t be repaired or upgraded, but you can bet they’ll be most Engineer’s next best friend. Congrats to everyone who got a Golden Wrench, you lucky devils, and if you were one of the lucky ones, like #100, DoomSwitch, let us know!
