Is Mass Effect Charting a Course for Multiplayer?
Could multiplayer gameplay be en route to the Mass Effect universe? EA’s website shows a recent job opening at BioWare’s Montreal studio for a Lead Multiplayer Programmer. An EA recruiter also posted the same job opening’s details to LinkedIn (hat tip to GamesBlend), except he described the role as “Multiplayer Programmer (Mass Effect franchise).” Hmmm…
OK, it doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together here: BioWare has some sort of multiplayer stew cooking in the Mass Effect pot. The question now isn’t if the stew will be served but how and when the stew will be placed in front of you. How will it be plated? Are we talking a cup to start or a big heaping bowl? Maybe a cup and half a sandwhich?
Apologies for all the culinary metaphors, I’ve yet to eat lunch today – the point is that no one outside of BioWare’s walls knows what multiplayer plans are being hatched and we have only enough information to assume and raise questions. And assuming is, trust me on this one, rarely a good idea. So, will Mass Effect 2 get a multiplayer DLC or add-on pack anytime soon or should we expect Mass Effect 3 to ship with a multiplayer mode? What kind of mode should we expect – deathmatch, open world, co-operative? How long does it take for a newly hired “multiplayer programmer” to churn out something playable?
These are serious questions, folks, with impactful answers. Answers which, once they are revealed, we’ll be all over like clams on chowder. I am so hungry.
