Is Square Enix crushing on Xbox? FFXIII Versus could cross consoles
Square Enix has two more Final Fantasy XIII titles in the works and one of them may be coming to an XBox 360 near you. It’s not FFXIII’s mobile compatriot, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, that one’s only slated for the PSP. But Final Fantasy Versus XIII, that one has a shot.
Previously listed as exclusive to the PS3, Versus is now being considered for a multiplatform release, according to Japanese site Impress Game Watch (broken English alert – that link is courtesy of Google Translate). In releasing their earnings report for the fiscal year ending March 2010, CEO Yoichi Wada was asked about the possibility of FFXIII Versus following the trail blazed by FFXIII and hitting Microsoft’s console. His response: it’s under consideration.
Before you geek the F out and completely lose your S, let’s sit down and have a T(hink) on this. Realize that we don’t know much of anything about Versus because Square Enix has yet to tell anyone. All we know is the game will take place in the FFXIII universe with an all new plot, set of characters, it’s own unique art direction, and a gameplay system that mashes up the action with the RPG genre.
Even though facts are quite fuzzy on this game, this is still good news for XBox 360 owners and, in my not-so-humble opinion, the industry as a whole. It shows that one of the industry’s heaviest hitters, Square Enix, is continually considering branching their franchises out onto new consoles. Console exclusivity, to me, sucks – it’s always struck me as more political than anything else. And I hate politics.
The jury on Final Fantasy Versus XIII hasn’t even convened yet, but the more once-exclusive titles going multi-console the better.
