*UPDATE: The Passing is now available on PC through Steam and other sources. The heavens have opened and shined DLC onto your bald spots.

And boy do people like to complain about it. Leave it to the forum mongers to go ahead and start complaining. As intended, Valve released “The Passing” DLC on schedule on Xbox Live for the price of 560 Microsoft Points. Not a bad deal for the type of DLC you’re getting. However with Valve’s constant support for their fan base, they’ve decided not to charge PC gamers for the DLC. You think that would mean something when the DLC isn’t released the same exact second as the Xbox Live counterpart. No so much it seems.

Regardless of the FREE DLC, Steam Forum members are beginning the slow rumble of gathering their pitchforks. The constant argument complaining of “I took off of work for this”, and “Why can’t they release it already, it’s just a simple upload” have already started.

Here’s the start of what might be a few more gems.

Look people, if you took off of work, smoke a joint, grab a cup of coffee, read a newspaper, or surf some porn. The game will be out soon and you’re getting it for FREE. There’s no conspiracy, and they aren’t out t get you. Let’s all take a deep breath and show the outside world we aren’t whiny babies. Stuff the QQs, have a coke, and smile.

*Rant Off*

I was playing with a L4D2 Developer last night, they were in a Versus game. While we were in the lobby I asked what time The Passing is being released, he said 12 – 3 EST so it should be out soon today.

  2. Justin Said,

Sounds like fun, and yes you’re probably right. Normally Valve does a 12:00pm PST release for their games. People just fail to understand this everytime a new game comes out

  5. 3:55 PM EDT and counting Said,

I think the problem most people have with Valve’s typical behavior in these matters is that just because you’re doing something for free, doesn’t mean you’re entitled to blow off your commitments.

If you tell a friend you’re going to help him/her move at 12:00 PM on Saturday, and don’t show up until 3:00 — and don’t bother calling to let anyone know you’re delayed — is everything okey-dokey just cuz you’re doing it for free? Or is it possible you’re throwing a major wrench into his/her plans? (Depends on the friend, I guess, but…)

You might say “but it’s just a video game”, but I and many others say “business is business”. My relationship with Valve is of a commercial/business nature; we’re not buds.

As for the bonus of it being free, well… Xbox fools pay the price because they entered into a deal with the devil — aka M$ — to begin with. PC people, I think we feel we are owed, #1 because of the scandal with all the unfulfilled promises of L4D1, and #2, the game is just kinda shallow. How much can you really play the same 4-5 maps before it just gets stupid-boring? (My answer: about 1.5-2.5 months.)

Not ranting and not really chomping at the bit for this DLC as the fire went out of L4D/2 for me long ago — though curiosity is growing… ;) Just trying to give some perspective.

    See u there l8r, maybe…

  6. Not Really Said,

Yes, the whining is childish and pointless, but complaints about horrid customer expectation management are spot on. I’m a relatively new Steam user so I didn’t know to assume that PC users would get it later and I have not seen it stated anywhere that PC users would not get it at a different time than 11AM PDT. I’m not going to cry and whine about it (especially since it’s free and the only reason I can even check is that I’m WFH due to illness), but i can assure you that my company can not get away with shoddy information like this. We would be out of business for loss of customers due to poor customer service and customer relations.

    @Not Really:
True but if you’re in the business of making stellar games like Valve, maybe you can get away with it.

@3:55 PM EDT and counting: Well said. The communication could be a tad bit better. Especially with how good Valve is at rewarding their PC fanbase.
