FFXIII sells more PS3 copies than Xbox…duh
In what must come as anything but a surprise, CVG is reporting that Final Fantasy XIII has sold roughtly twice as many copies for the PlayStation 3 as it has for the Xbox 360. Citing numbers from the NPD Group, FFXIII has sold 828,000 copies for the PS3 and 493,000 copies for Xbox.
This is definitely a no-brainer. After all, since switching platform from Nintendo to Sony, Square Enix has spent 13 years cultivating a fan base on PlayStation consoles. Everyone saw these kind of numbers coming, including Square Enix and Microsoft. In fact, I’d wager to guess that nearly half a million XBox copies isn’t a bad haul.
The other thing is that those numbers can only go up. Square has opened Final Fantasy up to an entire new fan base: the XBox only audience. The most pertinent question here is how many copies will the next console-based installment of FF sell on Microsoft’s console? A higher number the second time around would be expected, but by how much?
My point is that I’m hoping Square Enix sticks with a multi-console strategy for future Final Fantasy titles. I’m seriously interested in watching the franchise continue to branch out and make new fans because, to me, it’s one of the strongest and most storied franchises in gaming history.
Final Fantasy holds a special place in this withered and blackened heart of mine and playing through FFXIII on my XBox 360 has been a real treat. Regardless of my hate for the latest title’s ‘RPG-on-rails’ set up, Final Fantasy’s ability to weave a great story and take us to fantastically imagined places has never wavered. I just hope Square sees value in releasing future titles on multiple consoles.
