FFXIII sells more PS3 copies than Xbox…duh

FFXIII battle

In what must come as anything but a surprise, CVG is reporting that Final Fantasy XIII has sold roughtly twice as many copies for the PlayStation 3 as it has for the Xbox 360. Citing numbers from the NPD Group, FFXIII has sold 828,000 copies for the PS3 and 493,000 copies for Xbox.

This is definitely a no-brainer. After all, since switching platform from Nintendo to Sony, Square Enix has spent 13 years cultivating a fan base on PlayStation consoles. Everyone saw these kind of numbers coming, including Square Enix and Microsoft. In fact, I’d wager to guess that nearly half a million XBox copies isn’t a bad haul.

The other thing is that those numbers can only go up. Square has opened Final Fantasy up to an entire new fan base: the XBox only audience. The most pertinent question here is how many copies will the next console-based installment of FF sell on Microsoft’s console? A higher number the second time around would be expected, but by how much?

My point is that I’m hoping Square Enix sticks with a multi-console strategy for future Final Fantasy titles. I’m seriously interested in watching the franchise continue to branch out and make new fans because, to me, it’s one of the strongest and most storied franchises in gaming history.

Final Fantasy holds a special place in this withered and blackened heart of mine and playing through FFXIII on my XBox 360 has been a real treat. Regardless of my hate for the latest title’s ‘RPG-on-rails’ set up, Final Fantasy’s ability to weave a great story and take us to fantastically imagined places has never wavered. I just hope Square sees value in releasing future titles on multiple consoles.

Well, Mr. Greenberg (Microsoft director of Product Management) might be the only one who would be surprise when he find out about the sales. What happened to your xbox will outsell the ps3 version of final fantasy xiii, Mr. Greenberg?

I hope SE drops XBox the next time around. Seriously, the XBox limitations are now obviously holding back developers who choose to do multi-plat games. The PS3 exclusive games are starting to easily surpass Xbox only and multi-play games in quality, graphics, gameplay, originality, creativity, etc. Within 2 years it will crushingly obvious. Uncharted 1 and 2 were just the beginning and look at how much advancement occurred just between those 2 games. Sony has the undisputed game of the year 2 years running now. As more and more developers learn how to exploit the benefits of the PS3 they are going to choose to leave the Xbox behind as it will be like a weight around their neck. Wait and see.

Most of the Sony fanbase is focused on Japanese games, and multi-plat Jap games usually tend to do much better on the PS3 because of this.
Having said this, Japanese games have grown quite stale over the ages – especially since they’ve lost their staple RPG genre to American RPG’s like Mass Effect, Oblivion, and Fallout (go on, admit it).
I believe the PS3′s loss of dominance is a direct result of less demand for Japanese games.
    Just a thought.

I agree that it is nice that Square is branching out, but the xbox just isnt up to the quality of games like FXIII. Cut scenes were lagging, and it couldnt even hold the whole game on 1 disc like ps3
