Do larger Blu-ray discs mean bigger, better games?
The Blu-ray Disc Association have been pretty damn active lately. Out of the blue, news of Blu-ray discs are jumping from 25 to 50 Gigs for single-layer discs and 50 to 100 Gigs for dual-layered discs. Does bigger mean better though? As an owner of perhaps three Blu-ray movies, I can say that this does not mean a lot to me. But I do look forward to the space saving potential for box sets for shows like True Blood Season 2 and Community (just speculation) which might possibly only require a single disc or two, compared to the old DVD cases that took four to ten discs per season.
Gizmodo reported earlier today that the BDA has unveiled their new 128GB discs called BDXL. Kinky! I can only expect the DVD Alliance of America to reveal their latest plans, DVDA. Equally kinky! In all honesty, these huge Blu-ray discs will impressively hold a shit-ton of information, but unfortunately, we likely will not be able to take advantage of these formats on our current PlayStation 3s. Sad times for everyone, but it will be interesting to see if the next-gen models will take advantage of these Blu-ray capabilities.
In addition to the BDXL, Blu-ray will also offer dual-layer 25Gig formats called IH-BD. If this article didn’t include enough acronyms for you, plz STFU and DIAF, kthxbai.
