USB Memory Support Coming to Xbox 360
An update scheduled to hit Xbox 360 consoles sometime in the spring of 2010 is bringing with it a pretty nifty functionality feature. If you have been victimized by the glow of the Red Ring of Death, you know the frustration not only of losing a companion but also of losing all those precious game saves, DLC and whatever other odds and ends you have saved on your HD. And if you have been looking for an economic and efficient way to back up your HD in preparation of Xbox’s version of the apocalypse, you will be stoked to know that the spring 2010 update will allow USB storage support.
This means a couple of things for you Xbox fatalists out there, and even those simply looking for peace of mind when it comes to content stored on your HD. First, the ability to use a USB stick as memory will allow for much greater amounts of content to be stored on an external device compared to the typical 512 MB memory cards currently available. Second, it is an extremely cost efficient way to backup your HD when measuring up the cost of an additional HD ($100, 60GB) or memory cards ($30, 512MB). You can easily find 2G flash drives for right around $10, and while they might not pack as much storage as a hefty HD, they are certainly less cumbersome.
As a four-peat victim of the Red Ring of Death, I am truly ecstatic to see USB memory support coming to the Xbox 360, how about you?
