StarCraft II coming to, you guessed it, Mac

starcraft

StarCraft II is coming to the Mac, according to a Twitter Q&A posted to the Blizzard forums over the weekend. Well, at this point they’ve only confirmed a Mac version of the RTS’ closed beta that is being worked on, but why beta and not deliver the final product for the Mac? Blizzard is so going gold all over my Mac. Here’s the short answer, straight from the Ultralisk’s mouth:

Q. Mac beta please! Any information?
A. We are currently working on a Mac version of the beta and hope to release it sometime in April. Hang in there!!

In other news, it’s official: the Mac platform is having a better month than you. You may have closed that big sale, finally finished Mass Effect 2, or even finally got that promotion, but you just can’t compete with the March that Mac is having. In recent weeks, the platform has snagged Steam, Left 4 Dead 2, and Portal 2 from Valve as well as Fallen Earth from Icarus Studios. That’s like bedding the entire Dallas Cowboy cheerleading squad, Salma Hayak, Rebecca Romaijn, and Ugly Betty (sorry, Fallen Earth, that’s you) in the span of two weeks. Where does one find the stamina required for such a romp???

Are you a PC gamer already in the StarCraft II closed beta? Then let us know your thoughts on the game so far. And yes, I did use the term “bedding” in this post.

This article is a little ambiguous and I am not sure what they are trying to drive at other than the beta for Mac is a month behind the PC. Nonetheless, Blizzard has stated at both 2008 and 2009 BlizzCon that the do plan on releasing SC2 on both the Mac and the PC at the same time. Blizzard has always intended to release games multi platform on the same date for over the past 12 years. I cannot remember which one was the first but I would venture to say that even SC1 was available for both platforms at the same time.

Yeah, Blizzard has always made Mac versions of their games, and they’ve already announced that this would come to Mac long ago. Keep up.

SC1 was definitely NOT available for Mac at launch. It was PC only. PC/Mac Hybrid disks followed after a few months. I’m a Mac user and I’m definitely looking forward to SC2. It’s a big deal to us old-timer Blizzard fans.

@Darcy: Being available at launch at the same time and being in hybrid disks are not mutually exclusive. Then again, I didn’t start following Blizzard until a year after SC1. I would have played Total Anailhation if I had a computer that could handle it so all in all I am happy I had only a Pentium 120Mhz with 16 MB of RAM or I may not have ever gotten into Blizzard games.

@dasper: So thanks to Darcy clarifying along with the article, Mac users are hoping for a SC2 release day-of to go along with the PC release. From past releases, this wouldn’t typically happen same day, so Mac users should get excited this may be a possibility for SC2.

Being an owner of a PC, I don’t have to worry about it, but I am rooting for Mac users, as you have been having a great March so far. Steam, Valve games, Fallen Earth and potentially SC2 sooner than later, grats to you!
