Mac on a roll? Fallen Earth latest to jump platforms

It seems the Mac is on a roll these days, and we’re not talking about the iPad. The antiPC is racking up the gamer cred this week. We reported a few days ago on Valve’s confirmation that Steam, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, and Team Fortress 2 are all coming to the Mac.  That trend continues with the news that Icarus Studios has launched a Mac-compatible version of their post-apocalyptic MMO Fallen Earth.

The game may not have gotten the best reviews (a 70 on Metacritic), but this trend is nothing if not promising for Mac owners. Still, we’ve got a long way to go; I still had to partition my new MacBook’s hard drive and pony up 200 bones for Windows 7.

If you’re thinking about setting aside a couple gigs of your Mac’s hard drive for the MMO, check out the FAQ as well as the press release below.

North Carolina-based game developer, Icarus Studios, Inc., announced today the Beta release of its Mac-compatible platform and the Fallen Earth MMO. The software, compatible with Intel Macs, will allow players to connect to the same live server as PC users with game features optimized for their resident operating system.

The critically-acclaimed MMO Fallen Earth, co-developed by Icarus Studios and Fallen Earth, LLC, is the first title to support Icarus Studios’ new Mac platform. With plans to keep the post-apocalyptic momentum going, Icarus Studios is utilizing the open source software Wine to launch the Mac-compatible version of the game.

“The Mac OS X compatibility project is something we’ve been excited to see implemented for quite a while,” said Brad Lineberger, Chief Technical Officer of Icarus Studios. “Our goal for the project is to allow Mac users to run all of our existing and future games in their native OS.”

For optimal play, Mac users will need to run OS X 10.5 Leopard or later, using an Intel-based system with dedicated graphics hardware.
