Shaun-y White: Pro Skater?
In one of the most confusing moves in along time, Ubisoft has announced an upcoming skateboarding title featuring two-time Olympic hero Shaun White. What is so confusing, you might ask? Well, how about the fact that Shaun White is an Olympic gold medalist for snowboarding, not skating. Granted, the Flying Tomato (as Steven Colbert likes to call him) is fairly well known for his skateboarding, as well. The confusion comes from a market over-saturated with skating titles. I stopped buying them after Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 (crap), but unfortunately slipped up with T.H.U.G. (crappppppppp). I’ve played Skate 1 and 2 and enjoyed them, but the skating genre has been fairly played out since the second Tony Hawk title. If this is just a move to cash in on his Olympic success, I’ll be pissed, because he did it in freaking snowboarding!
Shaun White announced his own skate game on the KROQ radio program yesterday, where he could barely hold back his excitement. It is one thing to be excited about being a cover model for your own game, but it is a whole other story to be truly proud of it. I personally thought his Snowboarding game sucked. From the sound of Shaun’s sincerity, Ubisoft has been working on this game with him for a while. Hopefully this spunky red head can breathe some life back into a stale genre, after Tony Hawk:Ride nearly ended my faith in it entirely. Does White have the chance to soar higher than the Birdman at his own game? Well, I’d like to see him land a Double McFisty Twisty, or at least a 900 while skateboarding, before I can claim him the new king of skateboarding games. Mark your calendars, as Shaun White Skateboarding is expected for release during the 2010 holiday season.
