Resident Evil 5 – Lost In Nightmares DLC Review

Resident Evil: Lost in Nightmares

Resident Evil 5 was an extremely well done, solid game that sold a butt load. It’s also the first game I practically forced Dustin to play and complete from start to finish. It was a great cooperative experience and as a game, well worth the price of admission. As a Resident Evil title though, I feel it might have teetered out on the ledge just a bit. Too much action, not enough suspense. Too much bang, bang, shoot-em-up, not enough puzzles and tension.

When the Lost in Nightmares DLC was announced my anticipation shot through the roof. My hopes of a next generation “Resident Evil 1″ were instantly brought to life and once again we’d be traversing spooky mansions waiting for dogs to pounce through the window. Even better, we’d be doing it with a friend. Lost in Nightmares takes place before Resident Evil 5 and explains exactly what happened to Chris and Jill during their investigation into Oswald E. Spencer.

What’s Good

You’ve kept that loving feeling - Capcom did a good job for those wanting that nostalgic feeling. Everything from the look of the mansion, the dialogue between Chris and Jill, documents you’ll read, to the way you enter a door (first person mode). They even brought back more cranks than you can shake a … crank at. Capcom has gone back to their roots with this DLC, and they didn’t disappoint in that respect.

More suspense, less boom - From the moment you enter the mansion you realize that this is nothing like Resident Evil 5. No Majini riding around on motorcycles or groups of tribesmen throwing spears at you. With Lost in Nightmares, Capcom careful recreates the old atmosphere that Resident Evil fans grew up with. It’s exactly what I was hoping for.

What’s Bad

Just not enough - The DLC took around an hour and twenty minutes to complete, and that’s with two separate bathroom breaks in between. For only 400 points, I can’t really complain, but after waiting for eleven months I was hoping for a bit more. Not a whole lot in terms of enemies, puzzles, or exploration.

So what happened? - I thought the DLC was supposed to explain what exactly happened to Jill. Unfortunately it ends exactly the same way without going any further into explaining how she and Wesker survived and what he did afterwards. Obviously we have a good idea, but giving a final cut scene to put things together would have been nice.

After completing Lost in Nightmares both Dustin and I felt deflated. The episode itself was fun but it was over too quick. The new enemy introduced could have been used in a better, non-repetitive way. The mansion could have been expanded and there’s really only one puzzle that had us slightly stumped for a moment. After almost a year of nothing, I thought Lost in Nightmares would give Resident Evil 5 fans much more to sink their teeth into. Of course, there is the Mercenaries Reunion, which is always fun, but Lost in Nightmares was supposed to steal the spotlight. The 400 MS points is a fair price and shouldn’t deter you from downloading it, as there were a few “Oh SHI*” moments. Just don’t expect a whole lot more than that.
