PS3′s HD DVR to tear up Japanese market this March

Torne, a high definition digital video recorder for the PlayStation 3, has been dated for launch in Japan: the peripheral will rise in the east on March 18.

We’ve got our ears to the ground hoping for news of a stateside release. Initial indications are that Torne could be a must-have peripheral for PS3 owners who use the console as a central aspect of their home entertainment setup. Having already detailed the DVR in a previous post, let’s just go over the important parts:

Torne records TV programs, movies, etc in full and glorious HD, which can be stored on either the PS3 hard drive or an external drive. Connecting to the console via USB cable, the DVR boasts a menu of its own, an easy to use interface of recordable programs. Torne can be timed to record while you’re away from home and, perhaps most interestingly, can record while you use the PS3 for gaming or Blue Ray watching.

Torne will hit the Japanese markets around $109 US, with a PS3 bundle available for $467 US. If you live in Japan and are planning to pickup one of these gadgets, let us know how it works out! And know that we’re pretty jealous of you.

I'm one of those folks that uses their PS3 for EVERYTHING. I have over 1.5 TB of movies and TV shows that I stream through my PS3 to my TV from external drives. THIS is a game changing device from a business POV. A device like this makes the PS3 a central component to your household entertainment system – at least it does for me!

I thought this was supposed to be possible with a firmware update.
