New Super Mario Bros. stomps on Galaxy, sells over 10 million
There was a time when I thought that no 2D game could hold a candle to any 3D game. This was around rise of the Playstation/Nintendo 64 console generation, when 3D graphics in games were moving ahead by leaps and bounds. Today, however, it’s clear to me that quality beats presentation any day, on any system.
Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii recently reinforced this philosophy. Japanese site Nikkei Net has reported that the Wii’s latest side-scrolling blockbuster has sold over 10 million copies world wide. That’s 3 million sold in Japan, another 3 million shipped in Europe, and 4.5 million in North America…in only 8 weeks!
First reported stateside by Kotaku, it’s taken Super Mario Galaxy, Nintendo’s first 3D Mario title for the Wii, over 2 years to sell 4.1 million in North America. What 3D did in 2 years, 2D has done in little more than 2 months thanks to New Super Mario Bros.
