What could have been: rumored footage of cancelled Aliens RPG
*UPDATE: Sega of America has pulled the clip from YouTube since we first posted this. Party Poopers.
Aliens, the second film in the Ripley vs. scary xenomorphs saga, is one of my favorite films of all time. In it, director James Cameron took the dark, brooding atmosphere of Ridley Scott’s original Alien and pumped it full of steroids. Scifi fans like me delighted in a second taste of a future of deep space living, scary-as-hell aliens bent on nothing more than eating your face, and deadly corporate greed. At the same time, fans of action flicks and overall ass-kicking were blown away by scene after scene of alien vs. marine warfare on an as-of-yet untold scale. They totally should have made a game about it.
Well, someone tried. Obsidian Entertainment started work on an Aliens RPG in 2006, only to scrap the project this past June. Well today, we have a first peak at what is allegedly gameplay of the failed title. It’s tragic to watch, in a way, this glimpse of what could have been. The clip may only be a minute and 48 seconds long, and it may be dark as hell for most of the duration, but to me it shows promise. The developers had apparently tapped into the importance of near-total darkness and the fear that naturally occurs when you have only a flashlight mounted to your machine gun with which to illuminate an onrushing pack of hungry aliens.
