Blu-ray discs get bigger; that’s what she said
Sony and Panasonic have used the powers of the Dark Lord technology to allow Blu-ray discs to hold up to 8.4GB of more material. This increase in disc storage of around 33% more space means more special features on Blu-ray movies and PS3 games that can pack in more content, bonuses and depth. Hell, someone could probably make an eighteen hour movie if they wanted to. I’m not saying I’d watch it, unless it was an eighteen hour movie version of the TV show Trigger Happy TV, which would then be aptly titled Trigger Happy Movie.
This is pretty exciting for those of us who collect TV series and hate the fact that some of these packages contain up to eight discs in the packaging. I can’t tell you how frustrating it is that I can’t find my fifth disc of Freaks and Geeks. With the current Blu-ray disc capacity of 25GB, the all natural male upcoming enhancement means Blu-ray discs will be able to hold around 33.4GB of material. The new technology has yet to be approved by the Blu-ray Disc Association. But let’s be serious, how could an association solely based around Blu-ray discs not approve this? Although I’ve seen stranger things.
This update would be able to be read by current Blu-ray players and drives with a simple firmware update, which should be about as painless and simple as taking out the garbage. However, I can’t tell you how painful it will be when I have to upgrade my 1,000+ DVD collection to Blu-ray one day. Are we sure this isn’t the next laser disc fad? My Sony Walkman is still just fine for cranking tunes while enjoying my Skip-It.
