Battlefield Bad Company 2 Demo – MMOMFG Preview

Battlefield Bad Company 2

With the Bad Company 2 beta ending a few days ago, we wanted to fill you in on what fun you did or didn’t miss out on. MMOMFG grabbed their beta codes a little late, but nonetheless, we were able to partake in the loud explosions-destroy-everyone-and-everything gameplay. The demo places you in Arica Harbor. The gametype of choice is “rush”. The rush gametype starts the attacking team  at the beginning of the map and their objective is to destroy two sites, A and B. Once those are destroyed, the next tier of the map opens up. In order to win the team must move across the four tiers. In order for the defending team to win, they simply need to exhaust the respawn count. However, completing one tier adds more respawns for the attacking team. Pretty simple, but fun.

Bad Company 2.0 – Even though this looks a lot like Bad Company 1, DICE has put a bit more tech behind the Frostbite Engine for BC 2. Instead of blowing holes through a wall, it is now possible to destroy an entire building. More destruction = more happy faces. In fact, it became quite obvious as I sought shelter from a tank, that the building I was running to no longer was standing.

Jump in, Jump out – Obviously a beta won’t overwhelm you with too many options, BC 2 keeps things simple. Join a game, pick a kit (four in all), and start playing. You can choose to jump into a squad and spawn with them or go lone wolf. Completing objectives, killing baddies, and playing your kit properly (i.e. medics heal and engineers fix vehicles) will reward you with points, ranks, and weapon upgrades. DICE seems pretty generous with the amount of points they give to medics so I naturally progressed over to them, as I’m more of a lover, not a fighter anyways. If you’ve played any Battlefield game before you’ll fit right in.

PC or Console? – The beta was exclusive to the PS3, but I’ve always been more of a Battlefield player on the PC. For whatever reason, they’ve always felt better to me. From Battlefield 1942 to 2142; the huge maps, big player numbers, and vehicular chaos just lent itself better to the PC. Now the Bad Company series has been toned down a bit with less players, smaller maps, and conversely, less vehicles. This isn’t to say it can’t or won’t be a good game. But as far as multiplayer is concerned, I can’t help but think this is one of those games “dumbing” down because of console constraints. That being said, even though this isn’t a 64-man battle, the Arica Harbor map did feature plenty of space and enough nooks and crannies to make it feel very fleshed out.

Plenty of Unlocks – I only hit a few ranks into the beta demo, but from looking at it, there are plenty of items, weapons, and gadgets for the dedicated gamer to unlock. With 50 ranks to achieve, each class will have enough unlocks so that if you ever get tired of one, you’ll be able to move onto the next.

Boom goes the dynamite – It would have been nice to get more than one map for the demo, but beggars can’t be choosers. There’s just something about a Battlefield title that nails down destructible environments. The combination of audio and visual blends perfectly as a tank shell goes exploding into a side of a building or a single shot from a sniper rifle as it pops out of its chamber. DICE always seems to nail the presentation and if the demo is any hint, they’ve done it again.

Bad Company 2 comes out March 2nd in the states. Look for a review then as we’re excited to see just how much more blowing things up can be (I’m guessing, a whole bunch).
