Square gives Sony a hand – Final Fantasy XIII a boon to PS3 sales

*Update: Statistics updated for realism. Total number of units of PS3s and FFXIII copies corrected.
Japan is Sony’s territory. It is, at least, as far as console gaming is concerned. As the XBox and XBox 360 have struggled to gain market share in the land of the rising sun, the PlayStation 3 has ruled with a fist made heavy by a roster of highly popular PS3-exclusive titles.
Final Fantasy is another of Japanese gaming’s elite, so it makes sense that when it combines forces with Sony’s next gen console things get a bit out of hand. As has happened just today, in fact – Kotaku is reporting that Yahoo! JP has put the number of PS3’s sold in the four days since Final Fantasy XIII’s launch at 240,000. That’s enough to make it one of the PS3’s single biggest selling weeks in Japanese history.
While one had to expect that the gorgeous FFXIII PS3 bundles (pictured below) would fly off the shelves, 240,000 units and 1.5 million FFXIII copies is simply incredible. It’s a safe bet that the game will not have a similar impact in the states as it will hit both Sony and Microsoft’s consoles on March 9th.

The PS3 didn't sell 1.5 million console, FFXIII did! The PS3 however, did gain almost 250k new sell, which is very impressive on its own, but 1.5 million because of a game is crazy~
