Blu-Ray goes 3D, PS3 Reaping the Rewards

br_logo_header

Blu-Ray has recently finalized it’s updated specs for going 3D, including the PS3’s Blu-Ray player. This new codec, MVC, is an extension of the existing AVC codec being used. It will retain a 1080p resolution, while adding the capabilities for already released Blu-Ray discs to be backwards compatible with the 3D tech.

So what does that mean for you, PS3 gamers? It means, via future software update, your PS3 will play it’s Blu-Ray movies in lovely 3D, (granted you have a “compatible” 3D display*)! This is also a significant step towards a full-3D platform by 2011, a not-so-lofty dream for the Sony powerhouse. Expect to throw on your 3D goggles in 2010!

*After looking at the prices for a 3D TV, (a cool 9 grand on one of them) I think it’s safe to say we have a little wait before reasonable priced displays come out.

What does he mean by 3-D compatible? I heard that it will have to be a 1080p set with at least 120hz of frame rate. I forgot where I heard this, I just hope I don't have to invest in another set, right now I would be fine. Sounds very interesting and hopefully it will be a smooth transition. I'm glad I finally got my PS3 slim, it looks like it will be around for awhile. I still don't play a lick of online on the PS3 though and all the online play is logged on xbox live. They need to make something happen to get it up to par, or maybe the new influx install base will make it more intriguing. I just tried to play Killzone online and it was dead!

From the way it read, you need an actual 3D TV. Something altogether different, but perhaps they can get it to work on the 120Hz, who knows, it's a good year away.

That would be lame, I know I read and article relating to this issue, but I know a 3-D set cost about twice as much as your mid-range HD set.

Why would one need a special tv for 3d as you still have to wear the 3d glasses for any of those tv's scheduled to come out? They can do 3d on a standard definition tv or HD no prob with the glasses.
