Dead Space 2 rumors morphed into confirmed details

deadspace2cover2

Earlier this week the January issue of Game Informer gave us our first quick glimpse at Dead Space 2.  Today, that issue is landing in mailboxes across the land and the guys over at Rely on Horror have done a bit of analyzing. Rejoice fans, because we have confirmed details on the setting, story, and gameplay.

Dead Space 2 will take place on a space station called Sprawl.  Game Informer writes that Sprawl is an “organic, haphazardly constructed, long-term place that’s built around the remaining shards of one of Saturn’s moon-The first planet-crack ever. Like any real city it is not all built by one person. Some stuff was built up, and some areas, corporate areas, government areas, and public areas.” Forget the Ishimura vessel, Sprawl is a full-fledged city. Forget cargo bays and engineering decks – think malls, schools, churches.

Apparently the story of the second installment in the franchise will take place 3 years after the events of the original and will deal, in part, with Isaak’s attempts to leave behind the haunting memories of what took place on the Ishimura. Unfortunately for our favorite engineer, the necromorphs have resurfaced in Sprawl, and the citizens there are apparently too stupid to realize that you’ve got to blow off their limbs.  Massacre ensues and Isaak is Sprawl’s only hope, or something like that.  Worth noting, Isaak will speak in Dead Space 2 – leaving us to wonder exactly who will voice act the part. As much as I’d love to hear Bill Paxton channel his role in Aliens for this (“Game over, maaan!”), I don’t see it happening. In all seriousness though, it seems that Visceral Games is looking to craft an identity around Isaak’s character which could become central to the narrative.

The first thing to note in regards to gameplay is that multiplayer has been confirmed.  Rumored a few weeks back, details are short. What is said is that “you’ll get to strategically dismember your friends.” To that I say “Yes, please!” Details have also emerged on Isaak’s zero-g capabilities.  On top of walking, jumping, and shooting in environments lacking gravity, Isaak will now be able to navigate himself mid-air and fire his weapon whilst floating around.  Apparently Kotaku was right in seeing a jetpack of sorts on the cover…sorry for doubting you, McWhertor.

For a ton more info on Game Informer’s in-depth look at Dead Space 2, be sure to check out Rely on Horror‘s analysis post.  They’ve got some details on new weapons and enemies as well as some blurry scans of the magazine’s pages.

All of these details are very welcomed, and the Dead Space fanboy in me feels very confident in the direction Visceral Games is taking this franchise.  Now all we need is a release date.
