Patch 3.3

After months of waiting for the final chapter regarding the Lich King, World of Warcraft Patch 3.3: The Fall of the Lich King hits servers today. This is huge among the guilds, gamers and haters, as all-new content drops including another 10 and 25 man raid, Icecrown Citadel, multiple 5-man dungeons and the exciting, new cross-realm dungeon finder.

There should be enough content to fill your stocking through the new year, as Blizzard will not be opening every portion of the raid immediately and raiders will be forced to wait weeks for the tiered unveiling of Icecrown Citadel. If you don’t play WoW, this likely isn’t of interest, but for myself, who dabbles in it randomly (although I used to be a hardcore raider), I love the idea of cross-realm matching as Vashj (Trashj) has the world’s dumbest Pick-Up Groups.

Read below for the insanely deep patch notes for the free patch that some could consider an expansion if it were from anyone but Blizzard:

Fall of the Lich King, the latest World of Warcraft content update, is coming! The heroes of the Horde and the Alliance have faced unimaginable horrors and suffered terrible losses in their desperate struggle against the Scourge. Now the time has come to break through the fortified gates of Icecrown Citadel and confront the Lich King in the frozen heart of his domain. Follow Jaina Proudmoore or Sylvanas Windrunner through the Forge of Souls, Pit of Saron, and Halls of Reflection in an attempt to subvert the Lich King’s army in a new multi-wing 5-player dungeon. Join the Ashen Verdict as they charge through the citadel’s main gate to take on the Scourge’s most powerful leaders and fearsome monstrosities in a new 10- and 25-player raid. Fall of the Lich King also introduces the cross-realm Dungeon Finder interface, new quest-tracking features designed to make it easier to find objectives, and much more.

Icecrown Citadel: The Frozen Halls

Looming over the stark wastes of Northrend, Icecrown Citadel awaits those who would see the Lich King and his Scourge brought low and the threat they pose wiped from the face of Azeroth. The heroes who venture within will face some of the greatest horrors yet seen. But before you burst into the front gate of the citadel, an alternate means of entry beckons. Journey through three separate wings of the new five-player dungeon, Icecrown Citadel: The Frozen Halls, and follow Jaina Proudmoore or Sylvanas Windrunner into the Lich King’s domain.

So I wonder how this cross-realm dungeon finder is going to work? If it's to help you raid/plunder dungeons with cross-realm people then does that mean, server-shared instances will be in effect? Will server population burdens affect the performance of the dungeon? I haven't been on WoW since October, and while this sounds great as far as increasing chances of getting into that dungeon you need, I wonder if it will cause latency issues between low and high population servers.

I don't think the lag will be an issue, as I think they are hosting these instances (dungeons) on other servers solely for these purposes. Much like the current cross-realm battlegrounds like Alterac Valley, Arathi Basin, Wintergrasp, etc.

I really hope they don't run into issues like they did with Wintergrasp (Northrend's?) arena where it was overflowing memory usage into the real servers causing timeouts. If everything works out smoothly I will be having Blizzard tattooed across my chest and arse-cheeks by December 2011/12 with the Ultimate Trifecta of godly games are out (WoW:Cataclysm, Starcraft 2, and Diablo 3).
