Dead Space 2 officially official

Visceral Games and Electronic Arts have made official something that’s been widely confirmed and reported: Dead Space 2 is coming. Don’t get too excited, necromorph slayers, the official announcement comes with terribly few details. Outside of confirming that this title will hit shelves at some point, this morning’s press release does little more than remind us of why the original game was so freakishly awesome.
Here’s what we know: Dead Space 2 is coming to the PS3, XBox 360, and PC. The original game’s protagonist, Isaac Clarke, returns to wield new weapons against new enemies and zero-G combat and puzzle sequences are coming back. Playing this game in the dark with the volume cranked may cause a loosening of bowels.
Here’s what we don’t know: When the hell is it coming out? This announcement is truly a skeleton release – there’s no meat on these necromorphed bones. We don’t even have a timetable like “Spring 2010″ or anything like that.
And now time for some wild assumptions: The release teases a few plot points that have piqued this fan’s interest. Executive Producer Steve Papoutsis said “We’re thrilled to jump back into the series, making the next chapter in Isaac’s journey. The infection continues to spread throughout space and our hero Isaac Clarke is the only person able to contain it. There are still loads of necromorphs that need killing!” Furthermore, the release states that “survival isn’t the only thing on Isaac’s mind in Dead Space 2 – this time, he calls the shots.” Could Dead Space 2 take place in an environment other than a deep space vessel? Could Isaac be taking the fight planet side? Could we see the grim metal environments of the Ishimura make way for more familiar…earthy…environments?
Here’s to hoping that the next announcement out of EA tagged “Dead Space” includes a release date. How do you interpret some of these plot teases and where are you hoping this series goes?
