Shigeru Miyamoto says make love not war with 2D and 3D Games

Miyamoto

We first breached the topic of 2d vs 3d a few months ago. What first started out as a friendly discussion turned into a venom spewing argument about what’s better, what sells more, and if the 2d era is still relevant.

It seems Mr. Miyamoto, someone who’s made his fair share of both 2d and 3d titles, weighed in on the discussion in the latest Nintendo Power.  Miyamoto thinks that not everything needs to be 3d while conceding that there are huge benefits to it. On the the 2d front, he says these games should focus on fun and gameplay and not worry too much about visual experience.

At first I thought he meant 2d games can look like shite, but on second thought I take it that he means sometimes 2d games try too hard to be like 3d games and lose focus on the important aspect (i.e. FUN).  This couldn’t be more true as New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a blast to play and doesn’t require too much skill to just pop in and have some fun (as my gf and I played the entire weekend). As I said before there are still plenty of 2d games that are a lot of fun to play and can stand the test of time, not just because of nostalgia but because they were truly great games to play.

Can’t we all just get along? What are your experiences with 2d or 3d games? Do you prefer one over the other? Let us know!

I tend to like my 2D games in more of an arcade fashion, where I can pick them up and drop them at will, but still be able to put some time in if I truly want. Great examples are the Castlevania series for the DS, I love Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, and Order of Ecclesia. There are times where I would dump hours into a single session and would lose that connection between the game and me where I didn't get bored, but there were also times where I could pick up the game while my girlfriend goes into the other room, run to the next save spot in the game, and the quit out, just so I could progress a little. I also find this model works well for Xbox Live Arcade titles. Stuff like Trials HD, where I could dump hours in yet again, or play one level.
