Dead Space 2: Multiplayer much?

Dead Space 2

A Dead Space sequel is in the works, this is for sure.  But will it have an online multiplayer component? Such is the question that begs this week, after Joystiq uncovered a LinkedIn job posting pointing to the inclusion of such a mode.  According to the post, EA is looking for a “Senior Online Level Producer – Dead Space Franchise.”

Assuming that Dead Space 2: Don’t Forget Your Space Diapers This Time (working title….that I came up with) does include an online multiplayer mode, how would it look?  Are we talking about a deathmatch situation?  I find that hard to imagine, as the gameplay mechanics of Dead Space aren’t exactly suited for that type of game play.  The third-person, mobility limited system is in place more to enhance an atmosphere of fear and panic than it is to allow for running and gunning.

Just look at Resident Evil 5’s attempt at online multiplayer deathmatch – not exactly a hit.  As their movement/combat systems are so similar, its hard not to compare Dead Space to RE5.  Perhaps the second coming of the necromorphs will have a multiplayer setup more similar to Resident Evil’s Mercenary mode – which had players facing down a never-ending wave of enemies trying to gain a high score.  I’d hope it be more like Left 4 Dead’s Survival mode: no time limits, just survive as long as you can.  A co-op mode like this in the Dead Space realm would be very entertaining.

EA has yet to unveil a release date for Dead Space 2, let alone confirm this rumor.  If and when they do, however, we’ll be there to blow its limbs off…er, report it.

  3. Justin Said,

I have to agree with Andrew on this one Chris.
While the mercenary mode was da bomb diggity, the deathmatch mode wasn't my cup of tea. There were too many issues with player movement that just took the fun out of it.
