LucasArts unveils…something boring
All week we’ve been bombarded with teases on a new LucasArts title that was to be unveiled during last night’s episode of GameTrailers TV. Host Geoff Keighley had tweeted about it and the guys at Kotaku have been mentioning it all week. Well the announcement has come and it is so not what I was hoping for – LucasArts has unveiled a new original 2D platformer/puzzler called Lucidity.
Available via XBOX Live Arcade and PC later this month, Lucidity’s main character is an AI-controlled girl named Sophie. The player must guide Sophie along the side-scrolling map, altering the level so that Sophie can overcome obstacles and puzzles.
I have to ask: who cares? I mean, does anyone really think of this genre of games as anywhere near the cutting edge? Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy an hour of Castle Crashers here or there with friends. But does anyone out there actually put more than 5-10 hours into XBOX Live Arcade games like this? These aren’t rhetorical questions, I really want to know.
Once LucasArts starts talking about Rogue Squadron 2 or a new X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter title, then I’ll listen. But this 2D side-scroller stuff is weak. In my oh-so-highly-regarded opinion, a company with IPs like Star Wars and Indiana Jones are just wasting time on a campy little sidescroller like this. Call me when the game looks like this:
