Lost Planet 2 Demo Impressions
Released yesterday for Xbox Live Gold members (hobo Silver members must wait another week), the Lost Planet 2 demo features one fugly looking beast that not only was brutal standing next to, but required some solid team play to take down.
Though I haven’t touched the original Lost Planet in awhile, I always remembered that character movement seemed a bit clunky, which was one of my biggest grips about the title. Unfortunately it seems I’m going to have to get used to it all over again as movement is a bit slow for my taste and I can already see the grappling mechanics pissing me off. I know this isn’t spider man, but something a bit easier to use would be nice. After we got acquainted with our surroundings, Dustin and I tried our luck against the giant Akrid boss. After multiple takes we started to get the hang of the controls (all of which are plastered on the loading screen which lasts about 5 seconds).
Once we got around the controls and learned our mistakes, it became apparent that there was a systematic way of taking the bug down. Go for its legs, its shell, and once weakened, inside the beast, all while trying to avoid getting stepped on, pooped out (yes indeed sir!), or thrashed at by its huge tongues, like below.
The visuals look great; a step up from Lost Planet which (because of plot reasons) had a little too much white. The pace was frantic, which caused plenty of deaths (especially when the Akrid gets towards his final breaths). As I said before, coordination definitely plays a role, and four players sound like just the right amount. I’m excited to see what other types of team encounters Lost Planet 2 has in store as it seems that everything from the look, feel, and action are getting a boost.
Lost Planet 2 is coming this fall/holiday season. Check back then for more footage and our review.
