FIFA 2010 Announces U.S. Cover Athletes
EA recently revealed the cover for FIFA 10′s North American packaging. This year’s plastic canvas will be adorned with Sacha Kljestan, Cuatemoc Blanco, and Frank Lampard.
No idea who any of these guys are? I’m not surprised, but am happy to enlighten. Kljestan is a young midfielder who plies his trade for LA’s Chivas USA, enjoys occasional callups to the US National Team, and once flirted with a transfer to Scottish giants Celtic. Blanco is an aging Mexican legend playing for the Chicago fire who’s signature “Blanco Bounce” makes Mexicans swoon and Americans clench their fists. Lampard, finally, is a midfield staple for the English national team and London’s Chelsea FC who makes more money in one week than the entire staff of MMOMFG.com does in a year…minus Beau.
This cover takes after a long practiced formula of EA’s: mix equal parts globally marketable footballer with American marketable soccerer and Mexican marketable futbolista. Blanco fits here as he and his hunchback are HUGE in Mehiko. Lampard fits because he plays for the Yankees of English football, Cheslea, who is in it’s own right a global brand. But Kljestan?! This guy is marketable to the US Soccer die-hards who know how to pronounce his name (it’s Kles-jin) and no one else. Furthermore, EA could have picked a better representative than the guy who burst on to the scene with a hat trick over Sweden’s B-team before suffering a vein of form so mediocre that his appearances at the Confederations Cup made me weep over lost potential.
All in all, however, it’s what’s inside that counts. Sergeant Slaughter said that once (probably in one of those PSAs), and it’s doubly true for FIFA. I am much less concerned with who graces this cover as I am with how the game itself plays. This ’360 degree motion’ they’re talking about better not be an empty term dreamed up for a press release. Manager mode better be fixed and not have my team playing two games in one day during the FA Cup.
Check out the press release on this here. FIFA 10 hits US shores on October 20th.
